How does a real bat get tracked in VR?
The headset does not see the bat. It sees the controller. A mount holds a Meta Quest controller in a fixed, known position on the bat handle, so the software can calculate where the blade is from where the controller is. Fix the offset, and the whole bat becomes trackable.
That is why calibration matters. CricketX runs a short bat-mapping step the first time you use a bat, so it knows the length and blade position for your specific bat rather than assuming a generic one.
The result is that your swing arc, bat angle at contact and bat speed are all real measurements of a real bat moving through real space — not an approximation from a controller waggle. That is the basis for the swing-path heatmaps and shot maps CricketX returns after a session, and it is why MCC Lord's, the Toronto Blue Jays and Pakistan's National Cricket Academy use it as a training station rather than a game.
What do you need to play VR cricket with a bat?
Three things, and no PC:
- 1A Meta Quest headset. Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S or Quest Pro all work. Everything runs on the headset itself.
- 2The CricketX app. $20 one-time on the Meta Quest Store.
- 3A bat with a controller mount. CricketX bats run $60 to $120 depending on model and material.

Why not just use the controller?
You can, and for a casual game it is fine. The problem is that a controller is nothing like a bat. A Quest controller is around 130 g against a senior bat's 1.2 kg, roughly a sixth of the length, and your hands sit in the wrong place relative to the striking surface.
That matters because batting is a whole-body movement built on where the bat is, not where your wrist is. A front-foot drive with a controller rehearses a shape your body will never repeat with a bat in hand. You are practising something, but it is not the shot.
With a real bat, the weight fights you the way it does in a net. You feel a mistimed shot. That feedback is the point.
Which VR cricket games support a real bat?
As of August 2026, CricketX is the VR cricket product built around real-bat play with a purpose-designed mount and per-bat calibration. The other titles on the Meta Quest Store — iB Cricket, Cricket Strike, Final Overs, CricketR, VR Cricket Pro — are designed for controller play.
Generic third-party bat attachments exist on Amazon and Etsy, and some people rig their own. They will physically hold a controller, but without software that knows your bat's dimensions the tracking is approximate and the analytics are meaningless.
Is it safe to swing a real bat indoors?
With sensible precautions, yes — but treat it as swinging a real bat indoors, because that is what it is. Clear the space properly. Set your Guardian boundary generously. Keep people and pets out of the room. Do not play in a space where a full swing can reach a television, a window or a light.
The lighter 3D-printed models exist partly for this reason and are worth considering for smaller rooms and younger players.
Common questions
Can I use my own cricket bat?
CricketX bats ship with the mount already fitted and mapped. A separate mount can be added to an existing bat, but you will need to run the calibration step so the software knows its dimensions.
Does the bat need charging or pairing?
No. The bat is a passive object — it is a cricket bat. All tracking comes from the Quest controller it holds, which pairs with the headset as normal.
Will a real bat damage my controller?
The controller sits in a housing designed to absorb swing forces, and you are not making contact with a physical ball. A tethered wrist strap is still sensible.
